A Message From The New AIA Coastal Virginia President

Dear Members of AIA Coastal Virginia,
As I step into this role as your president for 2025, I feel both gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead. This year, we carry forward the significant accomplishments and optimism of the past year while embarking on a journey regionally to strengthen the broader foundation of our profession. Together, while reaching for new horizons we will advance our shared mission to elevate architecture and support the next generation of architects.
One of our primary goals for 2025 is to deepen our commitment to nurturing emerging talent through the alternative path to licensure program at Hampton University. This program offers a transformative opportunity for aspiring architects, and I am personally committed to engaging with firm leaders across our region to champion its adoption. By working together, we can open doors for future architects and ensure a thriving, diverse pipeline of talent.
Our work with students begins even earlier, as we continue to expand our impactful K-12 and higher education outreach programs. These initiatives inspire younger generations to see architecture not just as a career but as a means to shape a better world. Let’s amplify these efforts, creating a ripple effect of curiosity and creativity in our communities.
Engagement is the heartbeat of our organization, and this year, we’re placing renewed focus on in-person connections. From the Design + Honor Awards to Pecha Kucha Night and the Pop-Up Park, I encourage each of you to participate, celebrate, and connect. Additionally, responding to your feedback, we’re introducing a Speaker Series featuring both national and local architects. This series will provide valuable insights, spark meaningful discussions, and strengthen the bonds within our vibrant community.
As architects, we are entrusted with shaping the built environment in ways that respect and enhance our natural surroundings, enrich human experience, and reflect our shared values. This responsibility requires us to be advocates, mentors, and visionaries. I am honored to stand beside each of you as we embrace this vital work.
Let’s make 2025 a year of bold action, collaboration, and inspiration. Together, we will leave a legacy that uplifts both our profession and the communities we serve.
With appreciation and optimism,
Rob Reis, FAIA
